A Man’s journey
A Unique opportunity
Fatherhood, especially large families, is often seen as a sacrifice: your career, your social life, your quiet mornings, and your ability to go to a restaurant without checking to see if it is ‘family’ friendly first….
But what if it was the best opportunity for us to grow? As fathers, yes, but how about grow as our best selves?
Consider this:
- What if path of fatherhood is NOT a sacrifice? but THE principle path God has designed to shape boys into wise leaders and elders? Literally the curated curriculum for becoming the best YOU could possibly become?
- The best way to learn a subject is to teach it… So what if they ONLY way to get ‘better’ at life is to raise a family? How much more do you learn about your own path when you guide your children down theirs?
- You can not fully internalize God’s relationship with you until you have walked the path of raising your own children. You simply can’t. Not everybody walks the path of parenthood, and those paths have their own unique insights, but the path of fatherhood will grant you an insight into God’s mind that no other path can claim. My son was trying to climb a chair at about 1 years old. I was behind him with my hands under him, ready to catch him when he fell. He climbed to the top and happily raided the food he was after, never knowing I was right behind him every step. Hit me hard and I had tears in my eyes when the parallel dawned on me!
- Remember when you had time to workout? How tired and sore you felt after a particularly intense workout? You knew you were growing when you felt that ‘burn’. Muscle exhaustion leads to muscle growth… imagine what kind of growth you could be experiencing with all the mental and spiritual exhaustion that comes with raising kids? When approached that way- every sleepless night, every chaotic exhausting moment is another ‘rep’ that is improving you as a father and, ultimately, as a man and child of God. But it does take a deliberate attitude and approach to reap these ‘gains’!
In short, fatherhood is your opportunity to develop yourself in ways you would never have thought possible, or have the time for otherwise.
This site, A Father’s Education, is dedicated to finding the path towards deliberate development of fathers, with a special emphasis on the homeschooling father. We know that the best way to learn a topic is to teach a topic- I put forth that the best way to grow as a person, is to educate a person. But somewhere along the way we, as fathers, get so caught up with what we are teaching our children and how to teach them effectively that we forget that this journey is as much about YOUR education, physically/mentally/spiritually, as it is about raising our children. I want to change that a little, as best I can in this small piece of real estate. Please check out our ‘about’ page for a little deeper dive into who we are and the background we bring to this arena.
Please join us as we jump, head first with our 6 young children, into this world. Every effort given to their future, and their development… but somewhere along the way we find that we will have grown too!
